SKYTOLL HAS INSTALLED THE FIRST GATE OF THE NEW ELECTRONIC TOLL SYSTEM IN CROATIA

Bratislava, December 18, 2025 – Today, SkyToll presented the first functional gate of the new Crolibertas toll system in Croatia. The gate was erected on Sunday night and equipped with the necessary technology and put into operation over the next two days. The new electronic toll system, which will allow the use of Croatian highways without having to stop to pay the toll, will be launched in accordance with the legislation on March 1, 2027.

The first toll gate was installed on the A3 motorway in the Popovača – Kutina section. It consists of three segments with a total length of 33 meters and weighs 10 tons. Over the next eight months, SkyToll will build and connect another 211 toll gates of the new Crolibertas system.

“It is a very significant milestone in this large-scale project. Despite the fact that we still have several months of gate construction, optimization and fine-tuning ahead of us, we announce today that we have a fully functional version of the new Crolibertas toll system available. This will allow us to launch contractual testing in January,” said Peter Polakovič, Director of Strategy and Business Development at SkyToll.

In addition to the installation of 212 gates on the highway network, this technically and infrastructurally demanding project also includes the delivery of information systems, installation of advanced IT equipment, implementation of construction work during full operation and establishment of back-office data processing centers. In parallel with the installation of gates and technologies, testing will be carried out to ensure the functionality of each individual component part of the system. After the installation of all gates and related equipment, the system will be tested comprehensively at the level of the entire highway network.

Together with the first gate, SkyToll also introduced the prototype of a mobile inspection vehicle. Similar to other SkyToll projects, this vehicle can read license plates and process data from the on-board units of passing vehicles, both in and out of traffic. The rear of the Ford Transit Custom includes a full-fledged office.

The new Crolibertas system will enable contactless toll collection for passenger and freight vehicles. The collection will be fully electronic, and from March 2027 onwards the drivers will no longer have to stop their vehicles at the beginning or end of toll sections.

From a technical standpoint, the system will comprise two key technologies: ALPR (Automatic License Plate Recognition), which recognizes the license plate numbers of passing vehicles in real time and is designed to collect tolls from occasional users of passenger vehicles and toll payment control for all vehicles, and DSRC (radio communication system) to collect tolls from the vehicles with an on-board ENC unit, i.e. from trucks that must be equipped with an ENC unit, and from frequent highway users in passenger vehicles. The system also recognizes other necessary parameters of the passing vehicles.
